Sukhodaya Model School was founded in April 1985 in Mahipalpur Extension with the primary purpose of educating children from underprivileged families. It was founded by Late Wg. Cdr. Balwant Singh Jakhar (Retd.) and his beloved wife Shanti Devi Jakhar. Shri. Balwant Singh Jakhar served as a Senior Education Officer in Indian Air Force until 1991 when he took pre-mature retirement to fully devote himself to the noble cause of providing quality education to children of economically weaker section of the society.

Starting with 40 students in Nursery & Kinder Garten (K.G.), the school has grown to its present strenght of 580 students. The school building has been upgraded and expanded multiple times to accomodate growing needs from Nursery to 6th Standard. A new library, computer & practical rooms were added in June 1997. Ten additional rooms were added in June 2005 as part of building renovation project.
