D.A.V. Public School, Alkusa was started in 1982 as a first project School of Coal India in Dhanbad. Then Chairman-cum-Managing Director of Barat Coking Coal Ltd. Mr. B.R. Prasad inaugurated the school on 21st July 1982, with a mere 170 students and classes up to std VIII. It got its affiliation to the Central Board of Secondary Education up to secondary level in the year 1986 and the result was 100%. The school got its affiliation for CBSE for +2 classes in the year 1989 and showed good results.
This school, now, with a total strength of more than 2300 students studying in the classes LKG to XII has grown into two separate units. The Junior Level and Secondary Level situated at Putki on the National Highway No.32 that joins Dhanbad with Bokaro Steel City. The school has its own playground and essential physical facilities.
