Towards the end of the 19th century, Maharishi Dayanand Saraswati (1824- 1883) formed the Arya Samaj for the revival of the Indian Society intellectually, emotionally & spiritually. With a call “ Back to Vedas”, he gave the guiding principles of Arya Samaj, in which the foremost was the spread of education.
To realise Maharishi Dayanand’s dream , a group of enlightened, dedicated and devoted followers founded the Dayanand Anglo Vedic College Trust & Management Society which was registered in 1886. The Society founded its first D.A.V.School at Lahore in 1886 with Lala Hansraj ( later known as Mahatma Hansraj ji) as the honorary head master. Thus started the movement which right from the beginning was led by visionaries and patriotic men like Lala Lajpat Rai, Bhai Parmanand, Lala Dwarkadas, Principal Sen Das, Bakhshi Tek Chand and other like-minded people.
