Like all big things Gyan Bharati had its beginning in a most modest manner. Its function began in a rented building way back in 1962 when it started operating its school with mere three students-all wards of friends.
With the passage of time Gyan Bharati could gather momentum to create buildings and auditorium and other infrastructures on the first land donation from Sri Vishnu Dutt Bhartia-son of Sri Mannalal Bhartia of Raniganj.
Support and encouragement galore came from the patriach of Bhartia family Sri Mannalal Bhartia. The dream project of Gyan Bhartia in running schools and other social projects would not have seen the light of the day but for a few well known personalities such as Late S.M. Patesaria, Late P.C. Satnalika, Sri J.P. Shaw, Sri S.K. Jhunjhunwala and Sri S.S. Modi.
In its journey from obscurity to eminence, the school grew slowly and steadily carving out a niche for itself in the hearts of the people of Raniganj and surrounding areas and finally emerging as a 'Humble Institution'.
Today the school enjoys a pre-eminent position as an educational institution where it has a student strength of 2100 plus and an affiliation with the Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi upto Senior Secondary (in Arts, Commerce & Science) stream.
If one has to name a single person who has been instrumental in nurturing this school from its nascent stage, it has to be Sri Shyam Sunder Bhartia - its founder Secretary, with a love for education and realisation of its values and impact on society during his long educational career in India and abroad. He tried to combine the very best of occidental culture with the essence of oriental values in developing this institution as a "Model School". Consequently Gyan Bharati School occupies a pride of place in the crowded corridor of contemporary schools.
