In the middle of the beautiful lush green area atTarapur point stands one of the most oldest and prestigious institute of Barak Valley Normal School Silchar. Established in the year 1907, Normal school has evolved leaps and bounds. This teacher training institute has always been one of the recognisable establishments not only in Barak Valley but in the entire Assam too. It is a century old institution with many laurels and achievements.

From some of the testimonials studied, it has been analysed that the then, Chief Commissioner of Assam, Sir Benfield Fuller felt the need of an institution which requires the grooming of teachers in the land of peace and love i.e. Barak Valley. Thereby, Sir Fuller directed the educational director of Assam to initiate the steps required to fulfil this noble purpose. Finally, on 4thApril 1906, proposal for establishing the Normal School was granted.

Jagannath Deb, School Inspector of Silchar Subdivision, at that time, became the first Assistant Superintendent Raibahadur Agharanath Adhikari had the privilege of becoming the first superintendent of this glorified foundation. Meanwhile Sir Fuller visited the Normal school in the year 2006. He appreciated the workings of this institution by commenting that ? ?Six years have passed since this school was projected by me and I am very pleased indeed to find that it had done exceedingly useful work for education in the Surman Valley?.

From its inception, Guru Training was conceptualised and after a period of time Normal training was introduced which continued till December 2000. After that, JBT training module was projected which began in the year 2005 and ended 2010. Then UPTT program was initiated in 2011 which ended in the same year itself. Finally the D.El.Ed program was implemented in the year2012 and thus has been in progress till now.

This institution has been an inspiration to the people of this valley. Uncountable students have lightened up their careers and have attained success in their professional life along with good reputation in the society.
